Melissa Sterry is a globally recognised scientist, futurist, designer, and strategic advisor specialising in sustainable innovation, biodesign, and resilience. Founder of several internationally acclaimed first-to-market start-ups and initiatives, she pioneers nature-inspired solutions to highly complex environmental challenges. With 25+ years board-level experience and qualifications including a PhD in designing wildland urban interface resilience to major wildfires, she advises corporations, government agencies, and NGOs on cutting-edge sustainability and innovation strategies. Chartered with the Science Council, a member of the Design Council’s expert network, and fellow of the Design Research Society and the Institute of Science and Technology, her expertise in biomimetics, biotechnology, and ecological systems thinking positions her as an international thought leader in natural hazard resilience, climate adaptation, and regenerative design.
Seasoned in several inter-related fields, with copious creative and technical credentials, including more than a dozen national and international awards, publication in over 60 international titles, coverage in a further 450+more, and over 100 invited keynotes across 40 cities and four continents, in tandem with a network comprised some of the most influential innovators shaping science, technology, and design today, Melissa works to a global clientele comprised many leading organisations. Earlier projects Melissa founded at the intersection of sustainability, design, and the arts include New Frontiers [2008 - 2010] an award-winning interdisciplinary collaborative innovation programme that provided opportunities and stimulus for new sustainable design in partnership with knowledge-sharing partners including Royal Society of Chemistry, Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Centre for Construction Innovation, and Chemicals Northwest, among others. She also founded creative catalyst Societás, [2004 - 2010], which comprised a multi award-winning sustainability innovation think tank, collaborative laboratory, and strategic and communications consultancy. Seminal in its field, it brought together world-class international creative and intellectual talent to co-create groundbreaking projects in and across design, media and the visual arts.
As co-founder of the Creative Graduate Prize[2004 - 2010]and Iconique Societás Awards [2007 - 2010] she launched the world’s first online arts awards, spotlighting creatives from across the globe. Both these and other projects have garnered international recognition, media coverage, and partnerships with esteemed organisations, solidifying her reputation as a leader in creative and scientific innovation. Having spent over three decades working at the coalface of creativity, ideation, and innovation, Melissa brings a 360° perspective to projects, integrating understanding of both in-house and external issues as diverse as research and development, intellectural property, talent sourcing, funding and investment, adminitration, due diligence, and governance, and marketing and communications.
